Replacement vs. Repair
The most important question to ask when trying to decide whether your home’s eavestroughing needs replacement or just a simple repair is: How well does your present system function? Is water being collected and channeled through the downspout as it was designed to do? Carefully inspect the gutters to determine if any water is flowing from the back of the gutter. This is a clear indication of a problem and should be checked by a professional. When does my eavestroughing need replacement?
The best and most obvious indication that your eavestroughs need replacement is leakage. The next time it rains go outside and take a look at your eavestrough system. Is water overflowing the sides? Do you observe leaking at joints and elbows? Is water running down the side of your home rather than being directed away from the foundation? All of these are signs that your eavestrough system should be replaced.
Even when it is not raining there are some important warning signs you should be aware of: Do you observe cracks, sagging or rusted areas? Is a bird’s nest or other debris blocking the flow of water in gutters or downspouts? Do you notice mould or peeling paint on the side of your home? Take a good look at the fasteners on older eavestroughing to ensure that they are connected properly and do not allow gutters to pull away from the fascia. This will cause rainwater to bypass your eavestroughs altogether and will cause damage to your home’s foundation if left unchecked.
